Dogs, Stress and Holidays
It's that time of year again! The holidays are approaching and with them comes all the fun and family and friends. With kids home, and parties to attend, shopping and baking and …IT'S A LOT!
DO THE HOLIDAYS STRESS MY DOG?
Yes. I’m confident that your dog feels the change of energy in the house, feels your energy whether you are stressed or excited or tired, and is affected by the family and friends who visit, and the noise and laughter and general festive atmosphere. But don't fret-- I have some tips.
HOW DO I HELP MY DOG SURVIVE THE HOLIDAYS?
EXERCISE. A tired pup has less nervous energy and anxiety.
STIMULATION. Toys that require thinking are great for helping avoid boredom. Even chews and bones help entertain.
RELAXATION. As a canine Reiki and massage therapist I have witnessed the relaxing affects massage and Reiki have on even the most restless dogs.
ROUTINE. If possible try to maintain your dog's routine. Feeding schedule. Together time. Walks. If you don’t have the time, consider hiring a walker or dogsitter to visit your dog mid-day.
QUIET PLACE. It is vital that your dog have a quiet, comfortable place away from everyone to retreat to. It’s important that his space be protected and respected, and that visitors and children understand he wants to be alone for a while.
These are just a few pet care tips to bear in mind as the weather gets cooler, and the mittens and hot chocolate and decorations start appearing. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and if you have any questions or need massage/Reiki or playdates for your pup, just reach out.
Happy holidays to you and all the animals.
