Why Won't My Dog Eat?

Recently many clients have told me their dogs have lost their appetite. My own four dogs have as well. Assuming your dog is current on vet visits and has no health conditions that need to be considered I am fairly confident in saying the heat has a lot to do with loss of appetite.

Too hot. No dinner for me. Fanks, tho.

Too hot. No dinner for me. Fanks, tho.

But why would heat affect my dogs appetite?

  • Less play time

  • shorter walks

  • burning fewer calories

  • heat itself makes them tired

So what can I do to encourage them to eat?

  • add a tablespoon of plain nonfat yogurt to their food

  • warm some low sodium broth to pour over kibble. Warming it increases the smell.

  • scramble some egg or add raw egg

  • add vegetables-- I add low sodium canned carrots or mixed veg to change things up.

  • make sure treats have nutritional value--frozen squash, watermelon, strawberries, etc.

  • add a high quality superfood to meals. I’m currently using Dr. Harvey's Oracle which I stir into their kibble. My boys DEVOURED it. Find it at Dr Harvey.com or support local small business and get it locally here in Dallas at Purepet.com. The woman who owns Pure Pet is a nutritional genius for pets and humans and offers discounts.

As long as your pet is eating some food every day and drinking plenty of water every day, he is probably ok.

I’m not a vet, and this in not medical advice. Just feeding tips for picky eaters with no food limitations. Ask your vet before making any changes to your feeding program.
